About Us

The San Diego Coasters was established as a private 501(c)(3) in 2021 to allow community ownership of the country-western dance scene in San Diego, CA.

Mission: SDC is an inclusive LGBTQIA+ dance organization dedicated to creating and growing a welcoming community to advance country western line and couples dancing.

Vision: To promote country western line and couples dancing through regular events that nurture a dance culture of inclusion and participation.

The San Diego country-western dance scene began in 1992 with the opening of Kickers in Hillcrest, which held country dancing events every night. Stationed next to Hamburger Mary’s, the two were consolidated in 2006 to form what we know as Urban MO’s. After this transition, Kickers continued to be a regular country dancing event at Mo’s. In 2018, with 26 successful years under its belt buckle, Kickers at Urban MO’s was cancelled.

Shortly after the cancellation of Kickers at Urban MO’s, the San Diego country-western dance community came together to bring country dancing to The Rail, San Diego’s first gay bar. After we saw the strength of our community, the San Diego Coasters was established as a community-based organization with a mission to advance country western line and couples dancing through regular events.
